The Case for Copper

The tradeoffs: it costs more in both material and labor, and as a rigid metal pipe, it’s more vulnerable to bursting if it freezes—something every mountain homeowner has to think about.
The Case for PEX
PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) is flexible tubing that has become the most popular repiping material in the country. It costs less, installs faster with fewer fittings buried in walls, and—critically for homes up here—its flexibility lets it expand rather than split when water freezes inside it. That doesn’t make it freeze-proof, but it survives cold snaps that burst rigid pipe. The tradeoffs: it can’t be exposed to sunlight, and rodents can occasionally gnaw it, so smart routing and protection matter—details an experienced mountain plumber plans for.
Which One for a Mountain Home?
There’s no single right answer. For many cabins in freeze-prone areas like Green Valley Lake and Arrowbear, PEX’s freeze tolerance and lower cost make it the practical favorite. For exposed runs, rodent-prone crawl spaces, or homeowners who simply want the premium option, copper—or a hybrid of the two—makes sense.
